Writing Art and Architectural Histories of the Arabian Peninsula: Transdisciplinary Approaches between Visual Culture and Oral History
Laura Hindelang, Institut d’histoire de l’art, Université de Berne, Suisse
Book Abstract: How do we engage with the art and architectural histories of the Arabian Peninsula? How can we see beyond the current focus on contemporary production in order to embed the region within the larger cultural history of the MENA region? In this presentation, Laura Hindelang reflects on the challenges of the field and archival work for her recently published book Iridescent Kuwait: Petro-Modernity and Urban Visual Culture since the Mid-Twentieth Century (2022). She discusses the ways in which visual culture and oral history can offer new ways for the research on the urban cultures in the Gulf as part of a media-historical approach. She argues that transdisciplinary approaches have become especially important for reaching a more nuanced understanding of the past while writing the historiography of the Arabian Peninsula for the (futuristic) futures to come.
